Taking care of your tulips
Tulips love two things - 1) Water and 2) Cold! We pick our tulips at a more “closed” state so that they open up in your house and you can get the most days out of them.
To maximize their life:
Change the water every 2-3 days. Cut the stem by half an inch each time and add an ice cube in the water since they love the cold.
Keep them away from a sunny window. Remember, they love the cold!
Get a +10 day life out of them!
Tulips have hollow stems. Sometimes, air bubbles get trapped in the stem which prevent the tulip from taking up water.
Certain varieties, such as the gorgeous Icoon, the red/orange/yellow streaked tulip you see in the photo, have such big heads that they are prone to flopping over if they don’t get enough hydration.
The remedy? Take a needle and prick the stem right below the flower head. You can also do a prick a few inches below the head. Then let the tulips rehydrate overnight and you should see a massive improvement! In fact, the first photo you see on this page is 3 days after we used the “needle trick” and the heads fully opened!
The vase you choose is also equally as important. Choose vases that are tall and support a tulip’s hollow stem. A shorter vase does not provide the stems structural support and may also contribute to floppy stems.
